You mention the role of the grounded friend that Romeo has in Mercutio and Juliet has in the maid. I feel like in a ton of romance movies, especially those set in the modern day, the main couple each usually have that grounded friend. Although I don't think their roles in modern movies are as complex as Mercutio's role is. The grounded friend in modern movies are often stereotypes usually being fuck boys and sassy gay friends.

The good movies have some element to balance out its extremes. I do prefer Mercutio and the Nurse to many of their modern counterparts tho
DeleteI watch the movie you suggested. Mercurtio did a wonderful acting his part. its was amazing honestly.
ReplyDeleteTHE MOVIE IS SO GOOD!
DeleteIn regards to Tybalt’s nickname ‘Prince of Cats’ I kind of subconsciously assumed it was Mercutio’s ingenious reference to puss in boots; because puss in boots is a clever, well-educated, and skilled sword fighter(at least in modern adaptations). But I’m also not sure how old that reference of ‘puss in boots’ is(EDIT: Puss in boots originates in 1480- so it’s HIGHLY PLAUSIBLE).
ReplyDeleteThe answer seems to be that he is called prince of cats because he has a name that is often given to cats back then becuse of a famous book called Reynard the Fox — sort of like a person today being named “Fido” or “spot”. Mercutio uses it as an insult because cats are supposed to be unreliable and cowardly but they are also deadly and fast so its kind of complicated. Honestly I am getting this off the internet because the books I own that would answer this question are trapped in my office so I may be wrong about this.
DeleteI could not agree more with your assertion of Romeo when you quoted him saying
ReplyDelete"my very friend, hath got this mortal hurt in my behalf. My reputation strained with Tybalt's slander - Tybalt that an hour hath been my cousin! O sweet Juliet, thy beauty hath made me effeminate and in my temper soften valor steel"
Suggesting that feeling effeminate was THE precursor to all the tragedy that has happened up till that point and the only way to correct this in the eyes of the universe is to return to a stage of toxic masculinity
(hmm) I think I can anchor my thesis on this point

Excellent! honestly I didnt realize the toxic masculinity that links all three plays until AFTER I started teaching it tho it is a subject that interests me so thats probably why I was attracted to these stories without realizing why.
DeleteThis is a great point!
ReplyDeleteDefinitely wished that Mercutio was faking his death too. What an amazing character! He’s awesome!
ReplyDeleteIt’s so sad that the gang violence we see in Romeo and Juliet is perpetuated throughout history. So many lessons could be learned from watching a Shakespeare play.
One person suggested that Mercutio was going to steal the show so Shakespeare HAD TO KILL HIM OFF
