ENG201: IAGO! Dangerous Conceits are in their natures poison.

Guys! More stuff on Iago! Plus my outfit is rad! Also one of these videos came out weird but I AM NOT GOING TO DO IT AGAIN so you just gotta deal with it.

  1. Iago definitely poisons Othello's mind with ideas of unworthiness about being Black, he has not spoken this way about himself before and all of a sudden his language is peppered with negative references to his race. It is easy to compare this to modern phrases and concepts that continue to be insidious.

It is interesting that African literature is not commonly known. After taking a look at the wikipedia page for African literature, I recalled learning some stories in elementary school about Anansi the spider. These stories are based off of long lasting oral tradition. Other oral traditions as The Illiad and the Oddesey as well as Grimm's fairy tales are well known and studied in Western culture, and referenced in popular culture. It stands to reason that African oral literature is just as important and could give a lot of insight to pre-colonial African culture. Thinking about this makes me want to take an African literature class, hah.

  2. the way iago manipulates people and uses words to get into peoples mind reminds me of the story of adam & eve and the snake. how the snake persuaded eve to eat the fruit from the tree.

  3. Othello is a Muslim, however Casio was Catholic. Maybe Shakespeare wants to show us that all the people can manipulated regardless of religion.
