It's scary to know the impact films can have on the audience like the example you used about money, it's known the people in charge have power and money but many aren't aware or don't even think about their intentions like how they brainwash the audience to see money and wealth as a good thing and something you should obtain.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I'm registered for your film class next semester I'm also really hoping it's not online!

that’s why films are so dangerous! You think they are just to escape but you are learning things — that’s why you have to pay attention to not just what is happening on screen but what the studio writers and directors are putting in your brain! Stay alert!
DeleteAre all these hidden message considered subliminal message? if it is, it's scary to think they have us all brain washed to think a certain way. It's interesting to sometimes spot different companies being shown in say superhero movies, they subconsciously want us to think of these companies after the math which is a good tactic for them just to make money of us smh.
ReplyDeleteExcellent Question! Your question is about hidden messages, subliminal messages, brainwashing and the subconscious, so first of off let me say I was exaggerating a bit when I called them brainwashing — its a bit LIKE brainwashing. But notice that in the iron man and batman examples nothing is HIDDEN or ENCODED (which is what subliminal means): right there in the MAIN STORY in the GIANT MOVIE EVERYEONE IS WATCHING is a hero who is protecting cash he inherited from his dad. It’s not a subtext — its literally the text, its the plot of the movie, and its you don’t need to code break to see it it’s just right there for anyone to notice. All you have to do is think about what you are watching. If it was subliminal you would not be able to notice it without some kid of special apparatus or something. UGH SUCH A GOOD QUESTION I MISS YOU ALL SO MUCH THIS SUXXXXXXXX
DeleteAre parody's an imitation of making front of how art can be so repetitive? if so I wonder how and if Adorno will like parody's.
ReplyDeleteI thought about how for example the first Scary movie is just a way to make the concept of the movie Scream funnier and appealing to some audiences. And for the rest of the Scary movie franchise all it is is making front of other scary movies.
I think adorno would point out that parody SEEMS like its making fun of something but it is really just another repetition — SHRECK seems like its MAKING FUN of fairy tales but it actually IS JUST ANOTHER FAIRY TALE
DeleteSo crazy how messages are sent in movies but we aren’t actually aware that they’re sending messages because we are just watching a move... also its great how different every professor is because we get to learn so many different view points. The obsession with money is everywhere to the point it sometimes seems that money is more important than life.
ReplyDeleteugh i wish we were able to discuss this in class :(((

I know I miss class so much!
DeleteI hadn't ever considered that those two movies were sending that message, but it makes a lot of sense. I have personally always thought that Batman is a silly superhero (in the current idea of him, the brooding rich white guy who is very emo about his parents dying) and that if he had ever just gone to therapy, he would be much better off. For that reason I really like the Adam West Batman, and the Batman in The Lego Movie. Those versions are silly, and the Lego Movie one is even a parody.
ReplyDeleteI also think that The Lego Movie is an interesting movie to look at in this regard. It was made by a huge corporation (Warner Brothers) to sell Legos, but they seem to have cared a lot, and the story is really well done. What are your thoughts?
Lego Batman might be my favorite Batman and The Lego Movie is excellent and I liked it so much I wrote a whole essay about I I would be happy to send you if you email me asking for it. The tricky thing about the Lego movie is it is a whole movie that is all product placement from a major corporation but the CONTENT of the movie is about how major corporations are bad (Lord Business is the bad guy) and people should have the freedom to do as they want with corporate materials free of Corporate rules (just as the kid wants to play with his dad’s legos chaotically and he wants them set up in a specific way). It’s a tricky thing because it wants to have its cake and eat it too.
DeleteI would love to read that. It is an amazingly conflicting message, and that's definitely part of what I liked about it.
DeleteOne of the ways Hollywood makes money is my appealing to as many people as possible — one way to do that is to juggle conflicting things so different audiences get different things out of it. so when I saw Fight Club I was pretty sure that movie was MAKING FUN OF THOSE DUM DUM MEN but many other people were like FUCK YEAH TYLER DURDEN WAS RIGHT. I am pretty sure Godfather and Scarface are SAD TRAGEDIES about FUCKED UP PEOPLE but many people found the main characters straighforwardly heroic and they wanted to be like them. I thought the point of Captain America was “Bullies are Bad” but many people enjoyed seeing big white dudes punch opponents into submission. Is Shrek making fun of fairy tales or is it just sort of pretending to make fun of it while actually JUST GIVING YOU A FAIRY TALE. Is Sin City a parody or is it straightforwardly cool? The refrain I use in my life is ARE YOU MAKING FUN OF THE THING OR ARE YOU JUST DOING THE THING. It is often surprisingly hard to tell, and this is why I generally don’t like satire as a genre — it often serves as a vehicle for the thing being satirized.
DeleteThere was a line you said you in 4th video about how everyone is seeing the same movies and therefore thinking the same things/having the same values imprinted into them and that reminded of a quote (all of my comments are coming back to quotes haha) from my favorite novel, NORWEGIAN WOOD by Haruki Murakami, which is: If you only read the books that everyone else is reading, you can only think what everyone else is thinking. It's so important for this reason to keep pushing your limit not just in what you essentially "consume" in reading and seeing but also in what you listen to, where you physically go, who you physically meet and become friends with, etc. Not that these things will necessarily make you a better person: some people travel only to have their racist ideologies further strengthened after being abroad or after coming up close to a foreign people in a foreign land. But by always exposing and expanding your worldview, you give yourself the chance to be a better person, to take more things into consideration.
ReplyDeleteSeparate: you're right about the "comfort" of a corporation like McDonalds. I was taking a bus through Paris but had to stay the night and where did I end up in a moment of panic? At a McDonalds (I know, I know, shame). But the McDonalds in the Philippines has McSpaghetti, fyi! (Not that I've ever been just a tidbit from online!)
This is a great point! And I absolutely agree that art doesnt make you a better person — the Nazi’s were great art collectors.
