Very interesting topics, I'm not really a fan of superhero movies but this got me a bit intrigued!!
ReplyDeleteSure! Just keep in mind that what i was doing was describing how superhero movies get made to illustrate Adorno’s point about how modern “art” is just the same thing over and over. I was not recommending them!
DeleteI've been curious to find out why most movies are similar, it's depressing to find out the true reality behind it all! Only to think how many great movie ideas have been turned down because they wouldn't make tons of money back at the end of the day.
ReplyDeleteIt is sad to think about — that’s why I always recommend supporting weird movies! NYC is one of the few places in America that will play weird movies like THE LIGHTHOUSE
DeleteThis was really interesting and definitely changed the way I look at movies and how their made. Also explains why I prefer older horror movies rather than some of the recent ones since their just poor remakes with the same ideas of previous ones.

DeleteIt’s why it’s really valuable to get a sense of an art form’s history before deciding what you like and what you don’t — the things you like about modern movies might be things that were invented decades ago by other people and it’s always a good idea to go back to the source
DeleteI hate how all movies are the same... we need more unique movies.
ReplyDeleteAs for Everything owned by the same person is like how Disney owns so much, they even own Hulu even though they have their own streaming service.
My students were excited when Disney bought fox and marvel because finally captain America (marvel) can be in the same movie with Wolverine (Fox) like they are in the same comics together — but the bigger thing is that with one company making all the movies, and with all the movies being expensive superhero blockbusters what are you going to watch that doesnt look like that !
DeleteI can see this point, that there are a lot of situations in which there is a choice that's not really a choice. How then do we change that system and start getting more really different choices, like The Lighthouse. Is it just by supporting those options when they ARE available? That seems fairly passive. What are the more active ways we can ask for more choice?
ReplyDeleteIt’s tough! Cause you were born into a massive pre-existing capitalist system and the things you learned to like in childhood were corporate-owned before you had a critical apparatus to resist. I think you will be doing more than everyone else if you just remember there are other ways art can be — you can support young artists making cool shit, and you can make cool shit yourself, and you can try to spend on things that are owned by people not companies and you can spend lots of time with stuff that is public domain like Shakespeare or small beans like poetry!

ReplyDeleteSuch a common phrase- to never repeat (one's self)- but never truly embraced by anyone. It's problematic that the entire film industry is, for one, an industry and two, increasingly repetitious despite more and more opportunities arguably existing to create more stories from more places. What bugs me is when contemporary French or Indian or Chinese films attempt to emulate modern, bloated Hollywood... But it's also a paradox of the chicken and the egg- newer types of films need to be made, but so too must there exist a desire for these different kinds of films... Kudos to the folks at A24! But even they are not perfect as there exists the denomination of films which "feel" like A24 films despite not intending for this to be the case... As Marvel has formulas, so too does A24. But still, kudos!!!
Agreed! It’s tricky! My hope is that classes like this encourage folks to try new thigns!
