  1. Throughout the discourse of Phaedrus with Socrates, it talks about how good and bad a writing can be, alongside with the idea of saying how knowledge are within us. It similar to idea of Buddhism where people mind already have the good and bad, it just how that person uses it. (using the good to benefit the people you love, or is it to use those good as self benefit. depending on that person.)

Furthermore, the speech that was made by socrates is to spread the knowledge, by know what good and bad writhing/ speeches is, like how you said car salesman, or insurance. Getting the good or regretting later in life. Furthermore, when the discourse said about how human already have the knowledge, it could possibly mean the 'reincarnation', how one soul passes on to the next life, but wouldn't remember the previous life, but by unleashing the knowledge you slow understand or even reminder what it like to have these knowledge. How it may bring you to a higher statue in later life.

  2. To give some input on videos 3/4 (if it's not too late) I disagree- to an extent- with people inherently knowing good from bad. I do think that once we've had a certain amount of generally positive nurturing from our families, friends, and society we quickly pick up on the distinction between right and wrong in a moral aspect. But I do not think we were born knowing right from wrong, and that the nurturing we experience that helps us become functioning people isn't just us grasping the emotional intelligence we already possessed from infancy. Freudian psychoanalysis dictates that the ID is left pretty unconstrained until we learn the reality principle, (the reality principle is just basically understanding that we cant just have whatever we want when we want it.) and without learning that we wouldn't be able to progress past the stage of emotional/mental infancy.

I also feel like things like knowing good writing from bad writing- and to an extent even knowing 'right from wrong'- is an opinionated matter. I remember us going over this topic in class about 'universal truths' (like putting a baby on spike is bad *even if it was baby hitler*), but even then there is still room for debate among these things because while they are generally accepted by most, people still find room to disagree because these things are not technically fact. But I digress, I do agree that people do have a general sense of knowledge in a lot more ways than they even realize and that a good teacher/professor/role model/etc., is able to tap into that raw base line knowledge and help shape that into a more easily accessible and productive form, so they can apply it to the multiple facets of life and education.

  3. This is a tough one — Socrates, you are right, thinks that there are moral truths, and we tend to think its all up for debate, its all opinion. Plato was very concerned about controlling chaos, and I and a lot of my friends feel like TOO MUCH ORDER is the real danger.

  4. video 1.3 - I disagree with the idea that people basically know what's good from bad, because different people have different understanding of what is right and what is wrong. Our understanding of what's right and wrong is dictated by the environment and the culture that we are brought up in. For example in the Muslim Religion, there's Honor Killing. Quoting from research "An honor killing is the murder of a member of a family, due to the perpetrators' belief that the victim has brought shame or dishonor upon the family, or has violated the principles of a community or a religion with an honor culture." Honor killings may be acceptable to some Muslim beliefs and culture as something that is right. To the Western world, this is a serious crime and something that is totally wrong. Therefore, the understanding of what is right and wrong in many ways depends on who you really are in terms of your culture, religion and the way you were brought up.

video 1.4 - If the mind is dead, the body fails to react appropriately to external stimuli. So a body with a dead mind is a dead body.

video 1.5 - I agree that human beings both have a good and a bad side, and that every person cannot control his/her bad side all the time. For example, anger or backstabbing are bad values that I believe no body does not have. Addictions to alcohol, drugs, etc are classic examples of bad things that people do while they it is bad.

video 1.6 - Life is not just about food, there are many important things in life such as feelings, thinking, understanding and so forth. A person needs a functional brain to think, communicate and decide what he or she needs to do, needs to eat, needs to say and so forth to maintain existence as humans. But the myth of the grasshoppers, they chose the pursuit of pleasure over the pursuit of truth; which led them to their deaths (reincarnated to grasshoppers). So therefore, a good functional brain is needed to make appropriate decisions to ensure survival.

  5. I think your disagreement is fair — by the way I am not asking you to BELIEVE in universal ideas of GOOD and EVIL that cross all culture and time: I just want you to consider the possibility that there may be moral facts. Plato thinks all Evil arrises from IGNORANCE — drug users are ignorant of the damage they are doing, thieves are ignorant of how their actions hurt others etc.

KEEP UP COMMENTING I LOVE IT (but I only need one comment per BLOG not per VIDEO — you are welcome to comment all your want but I don’t want you to feel like you HAVE TO comment on each video)

  6. Most of all, I strongly agree with Socrates ideas which is about what is really good or bad writing because so many people talking, or speaking without knowledge and truth. And then, some interesting fact is that they even do not know WHAT they are talking about on something. They have just stated, or argued from their mouth, not brain. As socrates says, the purpose of life is speaking and talking. It refers how it is important to speaking with knowledge, truth, and justice. For example, just as we need to know exactly what the devil is so that we can distinguish and cope with the devil, we must know clearly what the topic is and write and speak.

Based on my perspective, I am very sure that the mind will stay with us longer than our body because our mind controls and gives tremendous effect on our body. This is because our brain and body connected each other and depending on how we use our brain, our body can change beyond our imagination. In my case, I have experienced that how our brain (mind) controls our body by doing meditation when I was taking Mind and Body course a years ago, I was truly impressed with the body that changed after meditation and belief. For these reasons, I think mind will stay with us longer than body personally.

    1. The mind body connection was big with the Greeks — they really thought about the whole person!
