Its Monique H. So in response to the metaphors in modern racism I have a great example. There is a movie called FREELANCERS that was released in 2012. It stars Robert DeNiro, 50 cent and Forrest Whitaker. So their are many examples of racism and irony in this movie as far as the relationships between the characters. There are also examples of cops treating black men like less than, also this adds to the break down of community ties, trust between civilian blacks and amongst other whites in any position of power. Robert Deniro's character Joe Sarcone appears to be Malo's mentor 50 Cent's character. In the end Joe Sarcone wants to keep Malo close and aware of all his movements as a cop in the police force who's father is murdered by a suppose drug lord. This is similar to Othello because of the motivation of the character Joe Sarcone and his actions that ensures preventing Malo from knowing the truth.
ReplyDeleteThis is a great example
DeleteI don't any modern racism in movies. however, in black mirror the episode called "Fifteen Million Merits" where its similar when bing one of characters is getting a clear what's going on in their society but the people around him are preventing him from knowing the full truth and telling everybody else.- michelle sosa
ReplyDeleteBlack Mirror is a great example. In modern movies notice how many that take place in big cities that feature only white characters.
DeleteOne thing to keep in mind as always is you can talk about characters and you can talk about author/audience — sometimes a movie will feature a character who is racist against other characters, but sometimes the author of the movie will put racist IDEAS in the movie for the AUDIENCE — so that racists in the audience will be happy.
ReplyDeleteThe movie The Green Mile (1999) is a great example of how the superficial has nothing to do with a person's interior. People are judged today for their appearance most of the time, and as they show in this movie, the protagonist is found guilty of a crime he did not commit and sentenced to the electric chair just because of his dark skin color and a false testimony of an angry parent. Racism has always been based on hatred of different characteristics or qualities that a person has. This movie also shows how not all police officers are good, since many get carried away by their ethnocentrism because most of them are white and, by the authority they possess, they abuse those people they consider inferior. The policeman who decides to help the protagonist who is falsely accused, gets teased and uncomfortable comments from his colleagues because they affirm that the accused man deserves it whether he has done it or not because he is black and only for that he should be punished.
ReplyDeleteIt would be interesting to think of other links between the two stories, tho I have to admit I don’t think I have seen Green Mile! Even tho I love Stephen King!
DeleteIn a scene with Iago, Roderigo and Brabantio our villain uses racism to angry Desdemona's father. However, he doesn't hate Othello because he's black.Like in a modern world where people use racism, anti-Semitism or xenophobia to hide there true agenda.
ReplyDeleteKrzysztof Szczepanik
Thats a good way of putting it — the xenophobia hides the true agenda, which in Iago’s case is CHAOS

ReplyDeleteI'm not completely sure of others stories that may have metaphors to show the racism below the surface of what may seem to be occurring but I will say that, I don't think I have thought about this story being connected to the bible before. It is interesting. It's interesting how you connected this story or the themes or main ideas of this story to events that may have happened in the bible. You may have brought up some where in the video that Iago may actually represent the devil and represents evil or something related to that because of his true agenda and how he plans schemes in order to destroy others.
ReplyDeleteYes and lots of people focus on how EVIL Iago is but rarely consider that Desdemona is so PURELY GOOD that she prays for her murderer while he is murdering her. So that Iago and Desdemona are like the good angel and bad angel on Othello’s shoulder trying to influence him AND HE CHOSES WRONG
DeleteI skipped over the concept that Cassio is of a lower class, it makes sense why he has to be crafty to make money and get his way. Iago is right, people's circumstances do tend to form them. I consider this a lot while thinking about politics, the symptoms are often treated but root problems deepen and are rarely addressed. I like to analyze texts myself to see what I can get out of them before getting more outside information but Othello is so dense and I am seeing I have missed a lot. The religious concepts are interesting, I was raised atheist so some of these details have escaped me. Aside from meaning this is very fun to read, Roderigo says "bold and saucy wrongs", which is enjoyable out of context.
ReplyDeleteBold and saucy wrongs is fun! Don’t beat your self up for missing things — the thing about shakespeare is you can read him for years and not notice stuff till the 10th or 12th go through. He is really complicated! That is why people are still talking about him 400 years later. Half the time when I go to the movies I stop thinking about it before i get to the subway. But I never stop thinking about shakespeare.
DeleteGood point, it is helpful to remember there are so many interpretations and scholars research these texts for eons!

ReplyDeleteCool! Got it!
DeleteI dont know of any racist stories however racism is taught and learnt. Racist parties and groups often accuse their opposing races of demanding their own individual rights too hastily. - Yohannes
ReplyDeleteI am glad you have avoided all racism in stories!
