I feel that recently the idea of merchandise (merch) has become so popular especially with youtubers or other social media influencers. Almost all of them promote a website with their logo/designs whether its clothing, pins, or phone cases. I feel like people buy the merch more to just make a statement that they like that person instead of actually just supporting the person themselves if that makes sense.

The paradox of Merch is that We are told to think about it as a marker of personal taste and group identity (Bourdieu) but Adorno would point out that it is also just funneling money to people who are already rich.
DeleteI've heard of this example before and that would be when college students want to buy a MacBook instead of a cheaper option to look as if they have to money to but the more expensive option rather than a cheaper laptop that does the same thing.
ReplyDeleteThat is EXACTLY right
DeleteWhat I find disturbing is that what if my taste in Shakespeare turns out to be as superficially based as that kid getting a MacBook to look cool.
Delete(I love Doc Martens!! Literally all i wear haha) the whole Merch thing is so interesting, i have a bunch of sweatshirts that are Merch and i will wear certain ones if i know I’m going to see certain people... I’ve never thought about people who say they don’t care what others think that way. That is so true, they care that people think they don’t care... so interesting. Also Chance the rapper can literally pull anything off
ReplyDeleteChance the Rapper can pull anything off because he has established his cool already! So anything he does tells people “I DONT CARE WHATS COOL” — WHICH IS A VERY COOL THING TO TELL PEOPLE!
DeleteI think tattoos do this too. Originally they were a thing sailors got, advertising their profession, or some groups, like Tibetan monks or native people. Then they became cool (slowly, my nana-in-law still thinks they are for criminals) and now they advertise a couple of things. 1- having them at all often indicates that you are punk 2- they are still used for tribal association (and cultural appropriation)and 3- that you like a particular thing. I have Harry Potter tattoos, which advertises to the world what a huge nerd I am.
ReplyDeleteYeah my X-Men tattoo works like that — its fun when people at they gym (in the BEFORE TIMES) used to come up to me and say they liked it cause I instantly knew they were an Xmen Fan!
DeleteAlso someone on twitter joked that Sailors famously get Anchor tattoos and its like LET ME GET A TATTOO OF THE ONE THING THAT STOPS THE BOAT FROM GOING ANYWHERE.
There has to be some psychological phenomena related to a child or children not liking or following what their parents like, be it from music to clothing to movies to ideologies themselves, etc. In this sense it always seems like children are reactionaries against their parents, whether or not they purposefully choose to juxtapose or contrast them. But at the same time sometimes children emulate the parents in both taste and ideology (think: ultra conservative or ultra liberal parents with corresponding children- family is the strongest factor for your own personal politics). It's strange to think that the choices we make are almost predetermined for us, or at the very least, extremely and heavily influenced by our environment, and by our parents (where we come from).
ReplyDeleteTHIS IS THAT THEORY! YOU ARE LITERALLY READING IT!
