I'm really confused about IAGO's motives. The whole reason Iago betrayed Othello was because of a promotion or was he racist as people say? Did Iago ever actually liked Othello or was he just waiting for a good moment to seize power?
ReplyDeleteAttack on Titan is a really good anime with 'racist' undertones.
IAGO’s motives are confusing because he is not a normal psychologically consistent human being! He says “I AM NOT WHAT I AM” — he is pure chaos, a kind of schizophrenic Joker type and so he has FIVE contradictory motives: he’s mad he didnt get promoted, he hates black people, othello slept with his wife; Cassio slept with his wife, he loves Desdemona. None of that makes any sense but here is the larger issue — what motive WOULD make sense for this level of total destruction! There is no justifying his evil. He is just looking for any excuse.
Deleteif Iago "thinks" Cassio is sleeping with his wife would even that matter because doesn't like her or is he just making an excuse just to hate cassio?
ReplyDeleteHe is just dreaming up random excuses to bring destruction. Normal people do things for a reason — he wants to do (destructive) things and comes up with a reason after — several reasons, none of which make any sense.
DeleteI think Iago simply enjoyed seeing the people around him suffer especially if he had any excuse to do it. Iago never suffered from remorse and never understood what true love meant so I think what he did, he did mostly for fun because he enjoys how one destroys the other, and of course for racism too because the fact that a black man is above him and names another man lieutenant instead of him, his ego gets terribly affected.
ReplyDeleteThis is a great point — he can’t experience love so he cannot understand it. But the word EGO means SELF and Iago doesn’t exactly have a self as I describe it in these lectures — my argument is that he isnt terribly effected by ANYTHING. But of course that is just me and LOTS of IMPORTANT people would disagree with me!
DeleteI could understand Iago's behavior if he would be rich. Rich people like to create chaos because they are bored. However, Iago is a working class. Maybe Iago wants to proof that he is better than others because he can manipualte upper class (both Othello and Cassio).

I don’t think a desire for chaos and destruction is limited to one financial class but I agree that he is proving his worth to himself by destroying upper class people
Deletei think iago is a a natural liar and manipulator and uses those "super powers" to help further his own personal agenda at the expense of everybody else
ReplyDeleteRight but notice that when we say “personal agenda” we usually mean selfish ends — but here Iago spreads chaos with not a care in the world that he will also be destroyed.
DeleteI was struggling to think of a parallel to Iago, and I recalled Uncut Gems. This movie stars Adam Sandler in a dramatic role as a jeweler in midtown Manhattan. We are introduced to his world of flashiness and selling high ticket jewelry items only to notice some trickery and chaos very early on. It becomes clear that Sandler's character Howard is involved in high stakes gambling which leads to problems with his wife, his mistress, his family, his customers, and his coworkers. He runs around like a wild man putting everything at stake so he can continue to meet his own ends. Then he gambles everything away again and remains one step behind. At many points in the film, it seems confusing why he continues to be motivated in this way. The main character's most well known quote from the movie is "this is how I win". It seems as though the lifestyle took over a long time ago and he is caught in a whirlwind, living for momentary highs. Iago is similarly stuck in a pattern of creating chaos without clear reasons but seems to glean some sick amusement from it.

I think that is a very good connection and I would love to see your paper 4 about JUST THAT TOPIC!
DeleteCool! I will consider that. -CF
DeleteHe probably feels as if he is being ridiculed so he must retaliate by going for people of higher class in order to reinforce his confidence. - Yohannes
ReplyDeleteHe seems pretty confident right from the start tho. I think more than confidence he is interested in chaos and there is more chaos in destroying someone upper class than lower class.
